An artists’ Mecca for decades, Taos, New Mexico is celebrating the 25th Anniversary of its Spring Arts Celebration Festival with grand events in May and June. The arts have long been a major part of the allure of this fabled Northern New Mexico town. From the Native American culture dating back more than 1000 years, to the Hispanic Santos of the last 400 plus years, to the Taos Society of Artists and the Taos Moderns of the last 100 years, art has played an integral part in the daily lives of the residents of this picturesque valley.

Each spring this small Northern New Mexico town invites tourists to enjoy its culture and arts with openings, plays, cooking demonstrations, book signings, and much more. This year’s festival has been extended another thirty days and ends with the 10th Annual Taos Solar Music Festival scheduled for the last weekend of June.

With a calendar full of exciting events showcasing all of the arts of Taos this year’s events promise to top those of any previous year. From flamenco to concert pianist; painting to food; writing to film - you name it, it will be in Taos this spring.

Rub elbows with Artists at Plein Air Event

Sixty painters, armed with portable easels, umbrellas, hats, sunscreen and individual visions will be painting outdoors, in the fresh air, around Taos from Saturday, May 3 thru Thursday May 7th.

Artists love the high desert light and the historical architecture of the area, as well as the spring blossoms abundant in May. Many of the regional artists have favorite spots including little cafes were they are greeted by friendly customers.

The festival is designed to appeal to a broad range of interests. Spring Arts not only celebrates the visual arts, on display wherever you look, but also the performing, culinary literary, musical and architectural arts that have drawn people to this area for centuries.

Festival organizers advise travelers to look for studio tours, music on Bent Street, a block party at the John Dunn shops, jazz on Ledoux Street, culinary happenings, book signings, workshops, art demonstrations, readings, and much more. The Mother’s Day Arts and Crafts weekend during the festival always draws an especially large crowd.

Art Walk

To put spring in your step, the Taos Gallery Association organizes an Art Walk the first Saturday of every month. Galleries will have refreshments and music, and some will have artists demonstrating their mediums. Pick up the TGA map at one of the galleries or at http://www.taosgalleryassoc.com/.
